The 115°F shade strategy
An exposed grill island facing west is unusable from May through September in Las Vegas. Every successful outdoor build here starts with shade orientation, not finish selection.
- Solid-roof patio cover or insulated aluminum pergola — not slatted lattice. Lattice is decorative; it doesn't protect a $31K kitchen from 115°F sun.
- Orient cook zones north or east when site geometry allows. West exposure adds dedicated misters and forced ventilation just to be tolerable.
- Outdoor-rated ceiling fans every 10–12 feet under the cover, on dedicated circuits with weatherproof switches.
- Misting line on a separate water valve with high-pressure pump — drops perceived temperature 20–30°F at the cost of about $1,200.
- Travertine or light-color large-format porcelain pavers — runs 15–20°F cooler than dark concrete underfoot. Critical for pool deck integration.
Clark County permit + HOA notes
- Clark County / City of Las Vegas — built-in gas, plumbed sink, dedicated electrical circuit, or any patio cover >200 sq ft requires a permit with M/E/P sub-permits. Plan review 2–4 weeks.
- City of Henderson — separate Building & Fire Safety queue; similar permit scope, typically 1–3 weeks plan review.
- Summerlin, Anthem CC, MacDonald Highlands, The Ridges, Red Rock CC, Lake Las Vegas — every patio cover, pergola, fireplace, and any structure visible over the wall requires ARC review. Plan on 4–8 weeks.
- Engineering — patio covers attached to the house and any structure over 12' high require sealed plans. Budget $1,200–$2,700 in structural engineering.
- Pool integration — re-decking around an existing pool requires coordination with pool service to drop water and re-set tile band. Add 1–2 weeks.

FAQs
How much does an outdoor kitchen cost in Las Vegas in 2026?
A built-in grill island with stucco surround and counter runs $9.5K–$17K. A full outdoor kitchen with grill, side burner, fridge, sink, and stone veneer runs $22K–$43K. Resort-grade outdoor kitchens with pizza oven, beverage center, slab stone counter and integrated bar run $51K–$86K+. Costs are driven by gas and water rough-ins, slab work and finish materials — not square footage alone.
What does a full backyard remodel cost in Las Vegas or Henderson?
Tier 1 backyards (covered patio + grill island + pavers) land at $19.5K–$35K. Tier 2 (outdoor kitchen + pergola + fire feature + lighting) lands at $43K–$74K. Tier 3 resort-style builds (kitchen, shade structure, pool deck integration, water feature, dedicated landscape lighting) start at $86K and climb past $155K with spa and pool integration.
Do I need a permit for an outdoor kitchen in Clark County?
Yes. Any built-in gas line, electrical circuit, plumbed sink, or roof structure over 200 sq ft requires a Clark County (or City of Las Vegas / Henderson) permit with mechanical, electrical and plumbing sub-permits. Free-standing pergolas under 200 sq ft and portable grills do not. Build4U pulls permits with the correct jurisdiction as part of every project.
How do you keep an outdoor kitchen usable in 115°F summers?
Shade is the budget. We design every Las Vegas outdoor kitchen with a solid-roof patio cover or insulated aluminum pergola (not lattice), orient the cook zone north or east when possible, run ceiling fans rated for outdoor use, and add misters on a dedicated water line. A west-facing exposed grill island is unusable from May through September — shade isn't a luxury here, it's the difference between a $47K investment and a $47K backyard sculpture.
Will Summerlin, Anthem or MacDonald Highlands HOAs approve an outdoor kitchen?
Yes, but every one requires ARC submittal. Summerlin, Anthem Country Club, MacDonald Highlands, Red Rock CC, The Ridges and Lake Las Vegas all review pergola materials, roof color, finish stucco, lighting fixtures and any structure visible over the property wall. Plan on 4–8 weeks of HOA review on top of Clark County plan review — we package both submittals in parallel to keep the timeline tight.
What stainless steel and stone hold up to Las Vegas UV and heat?
Use 304 stainless or better for grill components (316 if within 5 miles of Lake Las Vegas for chloride exposure). Powder-coated aluminum cabinets outlast stainless cabinetry in direct sun. For counters, porcelain slab and quartzite beat engineered quartz, which yellows and can fail warranty under direct UV. Travertine pavers stay 20°F cooler than concrete or dark porcelain — critical for barefoot pool decks.
